I have never been a fan of New Year’s resolutions. The main reason is that I tend to put too much pressure on myself to achieve my – somewhat unreasonable – goals. In my experience, once reached and celebrated, my resolution will get a checkmark, fall off the list. It will most likely not be thought about until the following year rolls around (hello weight off!).
Instead, as I embark on the new year, I have decided to choose intentions over resolutions.
Rather than fixing a specific goal, I am looking to embrace and continue to work on the intentions I am setting to encourage growth that I will carry into the following year.
This year I choose two words to embody the intentions.
Leap
One lesson learned from last year is that everything can change in the blink of an eye. It has always been the case, however, it took on an even bigger meaning in 2020.
I intend to leap, dive in, and take the steps even if they may be small. I intend to be bolder when it comes to executing my plans and exploring my ideas. From entrepreneurship to travel or even experiences, I am leaping and no longer postponing.
Faith
My second intention to deepen my walk with God. Faith and Surrender: that’s what I choose to stand on as the New Year begins.
I tend to worry and make plans in order to fix issues or to achieve specific goals. However, looking back, I see the pattern of not completely surrendering and attempting to manage some areas of my life on my own. Without even realizing it, I was telling God, “I got this”… but truthfully, I don’t. Not without His grace, His guidance, and my obedience. More than ever before, I choose to trust His plan. After all, God’s timing is the best.
Hebrews 11:1 is one of the scriptures I cherish the most. I am reflecting on this at the beginning of 2021.
“Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. “
Heb. 11:1 – NIV
What works best for you? Resolutions vs. Intentions?
Happy New Year!
